Mischa Gerrard

Research Associate

Mischa Gerrard is a postgraduate student, activist, and independent researcher pursuing an MA in Violence, Terrorism and Security at Queen’s University Belfast.

Her research investigates the architecture of online harm, with a particular focus on the radicalisation of young men towards misogynistic extremism, incel subcultures, and nihilistic or apocalyptic violent extremism (N/AVE). She examines how algorithmic bias and recommendation systems shape pathways to radicalisation, exploring the ways in which digital systems reinforce gendered segregation and the polarisation of the sexes.

More broadly, Mischa’s work interrogates how misinformation and ideological extremism erode democracy, challenge social cohesion, and fuel political polarisation in the digital age.

Beyond academia, she is active in advocacy, public policy, and community engagement, with a focus on supporting marginalised groups and promoting digital accountability. She has experience in public speaking and debate, and works with media and civil society on issues including disinformation, technology-facilitated abuse, and violence against women and girls (VAWG).
